How to study for finals in one week

One week is not much, but it is enough to improve your results a lot if you use it well. The trick is to stop rereading and start testing yourself from day one. Here is a plan you can adapt to any subject.

Before you start: 30 minutes of triage

List every topic that could appear on the exam, using the syllabus, lecture titles and past papers. Mark each one: strong, medium or weak. Spend most of your week on weak and medium topics. This single step prevents you from wasting time on what you already know.

The 7-day plan

DayFocus
1Triage. Gather notes and slides. Turn the first weak topics into flashcards.
2Review day-1 cards. Make cards for the next topics. Do 1 practice question set.
3Review cards due. New cards for medium topics. Practice questions.
4Review. Finish creating cards. Start a timed past paper.
5Review all due cards. Fix weak spots found in the past paper.
6Full review of the hardest cards. Second past paper. Summarize formulas on one sheet.
7Light review only. Sleep well. Prepare materials for the exam.

Daily structure

  1. Review due cards first (20 to 30 minutes), while you are fresh.
  2. Learn something new in 25-minute focused blocks with a 5-minute break.
  3. Test yourself with practice questions at the end of the day.

Save hours by not typing cards

On a short timeline, hand-typing cards is a luxury. Photograph your notes, slides printouts and textbook summaries, and let an app like StudyTok draft the cards. Spend your time reviewing and fixing them instead of copying.

What not to do

The day before and the morning of the exam

Do a short review of your most-missed cards, pack what you need and go to bed on time. In the morning, eat something and skim your one-page summary, nothing more.
