How to learn Spanish vocabulary with flashcards

Flashcards are one of the best tools for building vocabulary in any language, Spanish included. The difference between a deck that works and one you abandon comes down to a few choices on how you write the cards.

Put words in context, not in isolation

A single word on its own is hard to retain and hard to use. Add a short example sentence so you learn how the word behaves.

IsolatedWith context
Front: aprovechar
Back: to take advantage of
Front: Hay que aprovechar el tiempo.
Back: aprovechar = to make the most of / take advantage of

Include gender and key forms

For nouns, always learn the article: el problema, la mano. For verbs, note irregular forms that you will meet often, such as tener → tengo, tienes, tiene. This saves a lot of corrections later.

Practice both directions

Spanish to English builds reading comprehension. English to Spanish builds speaking and writing, and it is the harder direction. Mixing both in the same deck gives you a more complete skill.

How many words per day?

Ten to twenty new words daily is a realistic pace for most learners, as long as you also keep up with your reviews. A smaller number done every day beats a big batch followed by a week off.

Build decks by topic

Organizing cards by theme, for example food, travel, work, the past tense or “words from this week’s class”, makes it easy to focus on what you need right now. Group related words together so they support each other.

Use the material you already have

Vocabulary lists from class, textbook word boxes and handwritten notes can all become cards. In StudyTok you can scan the page and let the app build the pairs, then add example sentences where you want them. The app supports multiple interface languages, so you can study from the language that suits you best.

Keep speaking

Flashcards build recognition and recall, but you also need real use. Say the words aloud when you review, write a few sentences with new words every week and try to use them in conversation.
